New source of funding advice for education and training

The Scottish Government has now published the "Helping you meet the costs of learning and training" handbook detailing student financial support for academic year 2010-11.

This can be found on this Scottish Government website.

Please also note, that while we have in previous years distributed this document in hardcopy, the document will now only be available from the Scottish Government via the above electronic format. The attached document will be updated periodically to reflect changes in student funding practices and we hope you will find this format more helpful.

Girls Shinty Team - 2nd place finish

Congratulations to the Girls' Shinty team who came back from Kingussie unbeaten yesterday. This meant that they finished 2nd in the Highland Girls' League for season 2009-2010, five points behind Lochaber. This capped a great year having already clinched the Scottish Cup last October. With only Lyndsay Michie from yesterday's squad unavailable for next year and with Kirsty MacIntyre and Shannon Hartley to be added to the squad things bode well. Congratulations to all players already mention plus Janelle Viray, Amy Harris, Charlene Cattanach, Erraid Sinclair, Helen Nelson, Sheree Cattanach, Erin Mills, Becky MacInnes, Bethaney Hardman and Caryn Grant who all played their part throughout the year.

Young Scot

Congratulations go to Lyndsay Michie of S6 who has been sort-listed for the category of "Entertainment" in the 2010 Young Scot Awards. Lyndsay was nominated by her grandmother Joan MacMillan but this is a nomination that the school thoroughly endorses! Lyndsay will attend a gala dinner at the Hilton Hotel in Glasgow on Thursday 29th April where she will find out if she is successful or not. Lyndsay has been put forward on the grounds that she has been in the National Final for the past two years of the Spring Board Young Chef competition and also on the back of this she has been given an apprenticeship at Le Gavroche with Michel Roux. Good luck and congratulations

HMIe Inspection ends!

After a week of scrutiny the HMIe inspection is finally over! The experience for the whole school has been a really positive one with the school being viewed in a very good light, something which we had anticipated. We now wait with baited breath for the publication of the report on April 20th 2010. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all parents who took the opportunity to afford their views to the inspectors. I would also like to thank the pupils for their views and excellent attitude during the week. Finally and most importantly I would like to thank the fantastic staff (teaching and non-teaching) here at the school for their continued efforts in ensuring the pupils at this school are afforded a first class education.

Congratulations to Matthew Richardson who has received two unconditional offers for Robert Gordon University. All at KHS are very proud of him and wish him well in his endeavours!

Pupil has "Grand Designs!"

S6 pupil Elspeth Tayler has recently been accepted at Dundee and Edinburgh Universities to study on their prestigious Architecture courses. As part of her application for Dundee Ellie had to prepare a large portfolio of art work, which was a mixture of school work alongside pieces done at home, as well attending an interview. Having now received an interview date for The Glasgow School of Art Elspeth will soon have to make a choice of which institution to study at. We all wish her the best of luck in this final interview but also as she embarks on this seven year course. Well done Elspeth!

Future Chef Finals

For the third year in a row Kinlochleven High School had a representative in the North of Scotland Regional Final of the Springboard Future Chef Competition.

Erin Mills did fantastically well by finishing in 2nd place only a matter of points behind the winner Rosie Smith. It is a fantastic achievement bearing in mind that Rosie was last year's runner up and also the fact that Erin is still in the junior school. Erin worked tirelessly in the run up to the final assisted by mentor Brian Gunn, the Executive Chef at Lochaber College and should be very proud of herself!
